Post-Procedure Care After Sedation Dentistry
December 5, 2025 9:00 amAt Alma Dental Care in Petaluma, CA, your comfort doesn’t end when your procedure does. For patients who receive sedation dentistry, recovery is an important part of the process — and how you care for yourself afterward can make a big difference in how you feel over the next day or two.
Whether you’ve just had a filling, extraction, implant, or another procedure under sedation, Dr. Serrano and our team want you to feel confident about what comes next. Here’s what to expect and how to take care of yourself once you’re back home.
How Sedation Affects You After the Procedure
The effects of sedation vary depending on the type used. With nitrous oxide (laughing gas), recovery is typically fast — within minutes of stopping the gas, you’ll feel clear-headed and alert, and you can usually drive yourself home. However, it’s still a good idea to take it easy for the rest of the day, especially if you had dental work done.
If you received oral conscious sedation or IV sedation, the effects last longer. You may feel drowsy, sluggish, or slightly disoriented for several hours. In these cases, you’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first few hours of recovery, as your reflexes and judgment may be temporarily affected.
The Importance of Rest
After sedation, your body needs time to recover — and that means rest should be your top priority. Plan to take the rest of the day off from work, school, or any other obligations. Even if you start to feel alert, your body is still processing the medication, and overexerting yourself too soon can slow down healing.
We recommend setting up a cozy spot at home where you can relax. It’s best to keep your head slightly elevated while resting, which helps with circulation and can reduce swelling, especially if you’ve had oral surgery.
Avoid driving, operating any machinery, or making important decisions for at least 24 hours. Think of this day as your permission to do nothing but heal.
Eating and Drinking After Sedation Dentistry
Once you’re home, it’s normal to feel a bit hungry — but keep in mind that your mouth might still be numb. Wait until the anesthesia has fully worn off before trying to chew anything, to avoid accidentally biting your tongue or cheek.
Start slowly with soft foods like applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, or scrambled eggs. Avoid anything crunchy, spicy, or extremely hot, as these can irritate the surgical site or cause discomfort. Hydration is also important, so drink plenty of water throughout the day, but skip alcohol and caffeinated beverages until the following day.
If Dr. Serrano gave you specific dietary instructions based on the type of procedure you had — such as avoiding straws after an extraction — be sure to follow those closely.
Managing Discomfort and Medication
After your procedure, Dr. Serrano may prescribe medication to help manage any soreness or inflammation. Over-the-counter options like ibuprofen can also be effective. Be sure to take all medications exactly as directed, and don’t skip doses — even if you start to feel better.
In cases where antibiotics are prescribed, it’s especially important to complete the full course to ensure that infection is fully addressed.
Some patients experience mild nausea after sedation, which typically resolves within a few hours. If it lingers beyond the first day, let our office know. Most of the time, staying hydrated and resting will ease any side effects.
Oral Hygiene After Your Procedure
Good hygiene is still important after sedation dentistry — but depending on what was done, you may need to modify your routine. In most cases, you’ll want to gently brush your teeth, being extra cautious around the treatment site. If you had oral surgery or deep cleaning, rinsing with warm salt water may be recommended to keep the area clean without causing irritation.
Avoid aggressive brushing or flossing near sensitive areas, and skip any alcohol-based mouthwashes for a few days unless otherwise advised.
Dr. Serrano and our team will always provide you with tailored aftercare instructions for your specific treatment, so don’t worry if your recovery plan looks a little different from someone else’s.
