Dry Socket: What is It and Should I Be Concerned?

April 18, 2025 9:00 am

If you’ve recently had a tooth pulled—or are preparing for a dental extraction—you may have heard the term “dry socket.” It sounds a little alarming, and in some cases, it can be uncomfortable. But with the right care and awareness, it’s also very manageable.

Let’s take a closer look at this common post-extraction issue—what causes it, how it feels, and how to prevent it.

What is Dry Socket?

After a tooth is extracted, a blood clot normally forms in the empty socket. This clot protects the underlying bone and nerve as your mouth begins to heal. Dry socket (officially called alveolar osteitis) happens when that clot becomes dislodged or doesn’t form properly. Without it, the bone and nerves underneath are exposed—leading to pain and delayed healing.

What Does Alveolar Osteitis Feel Like?

Dry socket pain usually starts a few days after the extraction. It’s often sharp and throbbing, and can radiate to your ear or jaw. You may also notice a bad taste or odor coming from the area. If you’re feeling worse instead of better after an extraction, it’s a good idea to call your dentist.

How Can You Prevent It?

The best way to avoid dry socket is to follow your post-op instructions closely. That means avoiding straws, smoking, vigorous rinsing, or anything that could dislodge the clot. Stick to soft foods for a few days, and keep the area clean with gentle care.

What If You Do Get It?

If dry socket does occur, don’t panic—it can be treated. Your dentist may clean the site, place a medicated dressing, and recommend pain relief options to help you heal comfortably.
