Contact UsHow are dental cleanings different from brushing your teeth?
Dental cleanings performed by a dental professional are more comprehensive and thorough compared to brushing your teeth at home. While brushing cleans the surfaces of your teeth, dental cleanings involve removing plaque and tartar buildup from hard-to-reach areas, such as below the gumline and between teeth. Dental cleanings also include professional polishing to remove stains. Regular brushing is essential for daily maintenance, but dental cleanings provide a deeper level of cleaning and preventive care that helps patients maintain positive oral health.
Deep Cleanings vs. Routine Cleanings
Regular dental cleanings are crucial for maintaining oral health, but there are times when a deep cleaning may be necessary. Deep cleanings, also known as scaling and root planing, are more intensive treatments. They are recommended for individuals with gum disease or excessive tartar buildup. Deep cleanings involve removing plaque and tartar from below the gumline, smoothing tooth roots, and addressing pockets of infection. While routine cleanings are preventive measures, deep cleanings are therapeutic procedures targeting existing gum disease.
Will teeth cleanings whiten my teeth?
While it’s true that professional teeth cleanings can help remove some surface-level stains, they will not make a noticeable difference in the cosmetic appearance of your teeth. If you are interested in achieving a brilliantly white smile, however, our team would love to help! We offer two different choices for professional teeth whitening, and we would be happy to schedule a teeth whitening treatment for you post-teeth cleaning. What is Arestin® used for?
Arestin is a topical antibiotic that is applied in the gum pockets to continue fighting bad bacteria for weeks after a deep cleaning is performed. Once built-up plaque and tartar is removed from the patient’s gum pockets, Arestin helps stop periodontal disease in its tracks and prevents it from progressing. This treatment is not typically offered to patients who are coming in for routine teeth cleanings, but it may be recommended by our team if it is determined that periodontitis has developed and periodontal maintenance is required for the health of your gums and teeth.
